Nearing the turn of the century, and the rapid rise of the modern art market, provenance came to replace connoisseurship as the leading indicator of authenticity.  Adept at negotiating changing tides, Bardini evolved strategies to evoke convincing provenance, from fake certificates of authenticity, to planting objects in villas and chapels so that they might be discovered "in situ."
