Although the cultural salon can find its roots in both the Ancient Greek and Roman cultures, it gained its true momentum in 16th century Renaissance Italy where salons became important centers of artistic, political and philosophical innovation.

The salon has been defined as a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.
